Demonstrating Faith with Works despite COVID-19
Hello there, it’s been a little while and I’m pleased to be back, though the circumstances are not pleasant; talking of COVID-19. In the middle of the crisis the world is faced with currently, the need to talk about faith arises in my mind. Over the past couple of months, we have helplessly watched this vicious virus take its toll on the world as the numbers of cases now top a million. It is quite disheartening to say the least. People have lost their loved ones while others are on the verge of losing theirs. As if the pandemic is not enough trouble, frightening rumours keep popping up here and there. As pressure mount, panic seems inevitable. These are trying times and trying times tend to place a question mark in front of our faith. How tough are you?
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see- Hebrews 11:1.
In this case we are sure that there is a light at the end of this tunnel even when we do not seem to see it yet. We are just confident in God that He is aware of this mess and He knows how and when is best to fix it. Meanwhile we hold unswervingly to His hand and do our bit like a child walking with his dad on a dangerous and busy street. Even though he does not know where the road leads, he knows better than to let go of that hand. Our bit in this crisis is our work.
As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead- James 2:26
Demonstration of Faith
Faith opposes fear. To demonstrate faith is to display courage in hard times instead of fear. Every day you turn on the television and see the death toll increasing it is hard to not be panic-stricken. However we must not forget that death is the final equalizer; it is the debt that everyone must pay at long last. Fear and panic cannot prevent it. It rather brings it closer. So what do we do with faith amidst Covid-19 pandemic? We support it with action. That is faith and work.
Faith is not about being careless about safety measures and hoping that God is in control. That is putting God to test and that is also faith without work. The work to backup your faith in this pandemic is to stay safe by observing the hygiene guidelines recommended by health authorities and pray fervently for God’s intervention and protection.
Life comes in different shades and that is what gives it its color. Of course it is hard to make sense of difficult times while you are experiencing it but it helps to always remember that God cares for us all even in the toughest times. This helps to overcome unnecessary anxieties and gives an inner peace.
Philippians 4:6-7
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
My Daddy is coming for me
The picture of peace is not necessarily having everything in the right place in life and at the right time. Peace is an inner calm in the mind which is achieved by ridding the mind of unpleasant thoughts.
A story is told about a building on fire that was collapsing and automatically creating pandemonium in the environment. Everyone in the building was in panic because there were no escape routes. A child was found sitting down unperturbed in one of the rooms. When asked why, she responded “My daddy is coming for me.”
This is the kind of faith in God that brings peace in the middle of crisis. Let Him do the worrying of how to get us out of our mess while we do our part by staying safe.
